Need a Customized IV?
A healthcare professional can assess your health goals, medical history and nutritional needs to determine whether a personalized IV formulation may be appropriate for you.
Understanding IV Infusion Therapy
Learn how IV infusion therapy works, what happens during the procedure and the potential advantages of receiving treatment under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider.
What is IV infusion therapy?
IV infusion therapy delivers fluids, medications, vitamins, minerals, nutrients or blood products directly into a vein through a thin plastic tube called a cannula or catheter. Because the solution enters the bloodstream directly, it can act more quickly than medication or fluids taken by mouth.
How IV infusion therapy works
The exact procedure depends on the treatment, dosage, patient’s health and the type of medication or fluid being administered.
Medical assessment
A qualified healthcare provider reviews the patient’s health and determines whether IV therapy is appropriate for their individual needs.
- Symptoms and treatment goals
- Medical conditions
- Allergies and medications
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Relevant blood-test results
- Kidney and heart health
Treatment selection
The healthcare provider selects the appropriate solution, dosage, concentration, volume and infusion speed based on the patient’s treatment plan.
- Hydration fluids
- Antibiotics or medication
- Iron or electrolytes
- Blood products
- Specialized nutrition
- Vitamins when indicated
Preparation
The patient is seated or lying down. The healthcare provider sanitizes their hands, selects a suitable vein, cleans the skin and prepares the sterile tubing, solution and equipment.
IV cannula insertion
A needle containing a small flexible plastic tube is inserted into a vein, usually in the hand or arm. The needle is then removed, leaving the soft cannula in place.
Connecting the infusion
The IV solution is connected to the cannula using sterile tubing. It may flow by gravity, through an infusion pump or as a controlled slow injection, depending on the prescribed treatment.
Monitoring during treatment
The healthcare provider monitors the patient, the IV site and the infusion throughout the treatment. The treatment may take several minutes or several hours.
- IV site condition
- Infusion flow and speed
- Blood pressure and pulse
- Breathing and comfort
- Patient response
- Overall treatment progress
Completing the infusion
Once the prescribed amount has been administered, the infusion is stopped. The cannula may be removed, gentle pressure is applied and a small dressing is placed over the site.
Aftercare and follow-up
The patient receives instructions about caring for the IV site and following their recommended treatment or follow-up plan.
- Keep the dressing clean and dry
- Avoid rubbing the IV area
- Follow hydration instructions
- Take prescribed medication
- Follow provider instructions
- Attend follow-up appointments
Advantages of IV Infusion Therapy
IV infusion therapy can provide efficient and controlled treatment when selected according to the patient’s individual healthcare needs.
Potential Advantages
- Rapid delivery Fluids, nutrients and medications enter the bloodstream directly, allowing the body to receive treatment quickly.
- Reliable absorption IV therapy does not depend on digestion, making it useful when oral intake or absorption is limited.
- Controlled dosage Healthcare providers can carefully regulate the amount, concentration, volume and speed of the infusion.
- Supports hydration IV fluids may help restore hydration when drinking sufficient fluids is difficult or inadequate.
- Customized treatment The infusion can be selected according to the patient’s medical history, laboratory results and treatment goals.
- Direct nutrient delivery Prescribed vitamins, minerals or nutrients can be delivered directly into the bloodstream.
- Useful for clinical treatments IV therapy may be used for prescribed medications, iron therapy, antibiotics, hydration and specialized nutrition.
- Professional monitoring The patient can be monitored throughout treatment, and the infusion rate can be adjusted when needed.
- Suitable for ongoing care IV access may support repeated or longer-term treatments when recommended by a healthcare provider.
- Individualized treatment plans The type and amount of treatment can be adapted to the patient’s health condition and clinical needs.
Medical guidance is essential
IV infusion therapy should be prescribed and administered by appropriately trained healthcare professionals. Treatment recommendations should be based on the patient’s medical history, health assessment, laboratory results and individual healthcare needs.
